Instructional design for an online math academy

Applying digital pedagogy expertise to adapt an in-person experience for online delivery.

Challenge

CORE Learn is known for its face-to-face professional development and facilitation about math instruction and curriculum implementation. Demand for their expertise had been growing and they realized they needed to find a way to offer online facilitated learning experiences to reach more schools and districts. While they had significant subject matter expertise in math, they realized they needed a partner that knew the best practices of translating face-to-face learning into facilitated and self-guided online learning experiences. 

Solution

We worked closely with their staff to map out the scope and sequence of the courses to be developed. Right away, we saw a need to break up the content into achievable blocks, incorporate more illustrations, videos, and interaction points to support multiple representations of the material (as per UDL guidelines), provide periodic checks for understanding, and better pace the experience to avoid overwhelming the educator learner. The initial solution was piloted and revised to incorporate learner feedback to improve the learning experience. Completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the resulting online course was instrumental for CORE Learn to easily pivot their services to fully remote delivery.
