Combining Planning, Implementation and Outcomes-based Assessment

Everyone loves brainstorming and and exploring the ideas that generate enthusiasm one teachers and students, but making those ideas work in practical ways that generate observable outcomes takes planning and follow-through. This workshop series guides teachers and administrators through the planning both learning flow and standards alignment to ensure the compatibility of process and product in a project-based learning (PBL) approach. Special emphasis placed on technology tools that support student learning.

Part 1 – Leadership in a PBL School (4 hours)

Attendees: administrators, curriculum coordinators, teacher leaders, community stakeholders
This session focuses on understanding the the research, theory and practice of PBL, studying success scenarios, and introducing PBL to your staff and community.

Part 2 – Staff orientation to PBL (4 hours)

Attendees: teachers, support staff, administrators
This session orients attendees to the Project Based Learning approach, shares the research on student growth, progress with hard-to-teach students, and other evidence of success to promote buy-in and understanding (Co-led by administrators, etc. from part 1).

Part 3 – Success through planning and ongoing assessment (3 days)

Attendees: teachers and support staff
Attendees participate in extensive planning of an initial standards-aligned, real-world project, work from models to create their own assignments and assessment tools, and design a kick-off activity.

Part 4 – Keeping track of progress (ongoing throughout first project)

Attendees: teachers, support staff, building administrators
Professional developers provide onsite and online support, mentoring and problem solving throughout the initial PBL implementation.

Part 5 – Planning a cross curricular project (3 days)

Attendees: teachers and support staff
Following the same planning model, teachers work in cooperative teams to design and plan longer term projects that build on the intersection of complementary subject areas.

Part 6 – Monthly checkpoints and situated professional development (2 hours per month with online and onsite mentoring as needed)

Attendees: teachers, support staff, building administrators
Professional developers provide onsite and online support, mentoring and problem solving throughout the cross curricular project implementation. The last session will focus on lessons learned and planning for the following school year.
