Technology Strategy

A framework for shaping long-term strategies as an educational non-profit expands their integration with technology.

Committee for Children (CFC) fosters the safety and well-being of children through providing classroom lessons, teacher professional development, and research into social-emotional learning (SEL). For more than three decades, CFC has created and distributed research-based materials, now used in almost one-third of classrooms across the United States. While the need for social-emotional learning has been growing, so has the use of instructional technology in the classroom. That’s why CFC called on us to help them think through this transition.

CFC knew developing an efficacious path to technology-enhanced instruction was slightly out of their comfort zone, but they knew what they wanted: a stable, easy-to-use platform that supports efficient content creation and revision, gathers data for ongoing research, and provides educators and students reliable and secure access to SEL materials. The challenge was figuring out which approach would best suit their needs. Having heard of our work with others in the industry facing similar challenges, CFC asked Clarity to construct a framework for making the transition.

We assembled a cross-disciplinary team of engineering, product strategy, and process consultants to learn about CFC’s work, and the factors that contribute to their ongoing success. We worked across several internal departments to consolidate and document all the requirements; both what they knew—and didn’t know— they needed, and to help identify opportunities for leveraging technology more effectively in the pedagogy of SEL. Through meetings and interviews we defined the operational requirements—and from that—derived the technological specifications that will best support their work moving forward.

We delivered an extensively researched document that reflects best practices in digital education, usability, security and stability. These standards were used to analyze and document in-depth recommendations for their new technology framework, as well as considerations for systemic improvements near-term and an implementation plan moving forward long-term.
