Steelcase Education, the education arm of the global furniture company, creates flexible chairs, desks and other products to facilitate active learning in the modern classroom. But even the best furniture won’t alone redefine what learning looks like. So we helped to sharpen and share Steelcase Education’s vision in a number of ways.

Challenge

Creating environments for active learning requires more than redesigned physical spaces; it also requires a shift in how teachers teach and students learn. While Steelcase is the expert in designing furniture, they turned to Clarity for support in helping educators to design and teach in flexible, agile, and technology-rich spaces.

Solution

We undertook a three part strategy to help Steelcase demonstrate their leadership in active learning spaces. First, we helped them audit their rich bounty of research and resources to curate a concise collection that would inform and inspire today’s K-12 educators and administrators, and created a robust online toolkit of active learning resources for the K-12 Blueprint. From there, we further helped capture and convey Steelcase Education’s vision for the modern classroom by writing a book— Get Active: Reimagining Learning Spaces for Student Success—that provides educators with the insights and practical knowledge to create dynamic classrooms and schools. Leveraging our understanding of digital pedagogy in the classroom, we also prepared and hosted a comprehensive webinar for educators that shared active learning insights within a structured, high-level curriculum.

Outcome

The K-12 Blueprint Active Learning Toolkit is brimming with research, insights, floor plans, success stories, and videos of effective adaptable learning environments so that educators can better meet the evolving needs of students. Over a thousand schools have taken advantage of the freely available information resource since its publication.
