Tod Johnston Leads Apps for Mathematical Reasoning Workshop

Clarity Innovations’ Content Developer Tod Johnston has just returned from leading a workshop at the 59th Annual Mathematics Conference, sponsored by CMC South (California Mathematics Council) on November 2nd and 3rd in Palm Springs, California. Tod’s workshop—Apps for Mathematical Reasoning—led participants through an exploration of the latest mathematics apps and how they could be applied in the classroom to solve K-5 math problems.

“The teachers in attendance solved a problem using a visual model of their choice,” Tod explains. “Then, they posted their solutions to a shared Google Slides presentation. It was a great way for them to discover the Math Learning Center’s set of free digital manipulatives and how they could be used to deepen a student’s mathematical understanding!”

Speaking of Math Learning Center apps, the organization was mentioned in the Edutopia article, “Effective Technology Use in Math Class”. Math Learning Center was included in a round-up of technology that fosters deep mathematical thinking: “The Math Learning Center…provides several manipulative options, such as rekenreks, geoboards, number lines, and number frames. Apps and websites that provide these types of virtual tools are easy to use, support students with conceptual understanding, and increase student access to math tools.”
