Freeze Frame: An Appreciation for Beauty

Published August 14, 2008.
I recently took a trip to the Great White North with a close friend and our two teenage boys. I was absolutely amazed at the beauty before me and wanted to capture every breath-taking moment through my digital lense. Upon pulling out my camera my fourteen year-old promptly requested that he have possession of the camera and so the story begins.....

He couldn't have asked for a better tool to capture the beauty before us. I was in awe over his desire to take in the scenery because in trips past the countryside and all its wonder and glory never seemed to captivate his attention. The digital camera and the magic behind the powerful lense drew him into all our nation's beauty has to offer. I began by simply observing his actions trying to understand and possibly view the subjects from his perspective. I believed I was seeing what he was seeing but when I began to inquire about his subjects and what he "saw" through the magical lense I was amazed at his perspective.

He shared with me that his focus for subject matter since becoming interested in photography has shifted from general to more specific. "I like to focus on certain movements, expressions, times of day, angles and lighting." The beauty of digital photography allows him the opportunity to shoot multiple pictures of the same subject within a few seconds. He expressed the desire to take as many pictures as possible and would later download them to review his work of art.

He shared with me later that first evening as we arrived at our mid-point destination that his desire to take pictures is far cooler than anything he's ever done before. "I see before me the beauty in detail, something I've never noticed before."

He couldn't get enough of his newly found hobby and looked forward to sharing and critiquing the pictures as we perused the many wonders of our world that were captured frame by frame. As I sat listening and viewing the pictures in awe, I began to see the wheels turning in his mind. Before I could ask the question his request to get his own camera popped out of his mouth. It's hard to turn down a request like that especially when you realize the positive effects this new hobby has had on his view of the world. It looks as if our next journey will be to the camera store. In the meantime we'll begin researching the best possible camera for the type of pictures he wants to shoot.
