Clarity's New Geoboard App Stretches Learning in Exciting New Ways

A few rubber bands and a pegged wooden “geoboard” have long proven to be an effective manipulative for aiding students’ understanding of basic mathematic principles.

Now, an engaging new app created by Clarity Innovations and The Math Learning Center brings this classic hands-on experience to the latest mobile devices including iPod Touches, iPhones, or iPads.

The Geoboard app is an open-ended tool for exploring a variety of mathematical topics introduced in the elementary and middle grades. Learners stretch colored virtual bands around pegs to form line segments and polygons and make discoveries about perimeter, area, angles, congruence, fractions, and more.Read more...

Thor Prichard presenting at the 2012 SIIA Ed Tech Industry Summit

To continue the conversations with colleagues and share some of our latest research, Thor Prichard will be presenting at the 2012 SIIA Ed Tech Industry Summit May 6th-9th in San Francisco. Tysa Fennern, Technical Producer for Clarity Innovations, will be co-presenting later this month at the spring meeting of the Oregon Professional Development Cadre (PDCadre) about the five C's of content: collecting, consuming, currating, creating, and contributing. In its eighth year, the PDCadre identifies and disseminates best practices of innovative technology integration in teaching and learning. It is a network of instructional technology specialists, staff developers and tech-savvy educators from around the state that meet twice a year. Presenting with Tysa is Corin Richards, Instructional Technology Coach at Dallas School District, Trainer at the Oregon Virtual School District, and Instructional Technologist at Willamette ESD.

SxSW Education & Interactive

The nexus of technology and education shares much in common with another crossroad: technology and creativity. Intersections like these are what South by Southwest (SXSW) is all about.

So it was only appropriate that they are growing the education portion of the event with a special preconference: SXSWedu. The event mixes education professionals with those from leaders in business and policy who all share a keen interest in modernizing teaching and learning.

Continuing tradition, we're sending Thor Prichard, our intrepid reporter/representive/guinea pig, to collect research, identify trends, and gain more perspective on what's ahead. So if you're attending, or just interested in learning what comes from it, stay tuned to the Foundry Blog for reports from the field.
