This is a great post! I agree 110% with questioning these sorts of policies. Perhaps that lone dissenting voice in the comments about the Oregonian article is/was a math teacher that witnessed the Great Calculator Reformation of the 1980s: from harbinger of doom for all students' math abilities, to an instructional device that supports the learning process.
